John Deere 630 paint questions.

Hello all,

I am painting the rims on this 1959 630. Can I get the correct shade of yellow at the dealership? Also, I am hearing that the generator was green, is this correct? Is the dash a semi-gloss black or gloss black? Finally, the famous color behind the lights question - on deluxe fenders, black or green behind the lights? Thanks.

Nate

The generator is Green. Behind the lights on the fenders is Black. I think I know which Black to use but I rather let someone else who knows for sure reply. Maybe F-I-T will see this. He paints quite a bit and will know what looks good. Deere may not be the best place to get it tho.

Behind the fender lights is GREEN. Have never seen a pic in an owners manual with them black. They started the black with the New Generation

I sure don't know what the "correct police" think is correct. But I sure do like to break up all that green with black generators, lights, behind the lights, black axles.

I never used to like it but as I age I like highlighting the gear shift tower gear numbers in yellow. Sure helps me tell which gear I'm going into at evening and night.

For the dash, the color I think is closest sold by Deere is Blitz Black, which I would describe as a satin. I remember it first being sold at the dealer back when it was used as trim paint on snowmobiles.

If you want a rim paint that is shiny and tough at the same time, look into some DuPont Fulthane II, urethane, code 263. I first used the yellow on a 72" mower deck and it has held really well considering all that a mower deck goes through, what with scrapes and scratches. Not the best photo, but that paint is two seasons old in that photo.

From everything I have seen and heard, the fenders behind the lights were green. It makes sense as JD Waterloo was not known for fabulous paint jobs and they would not mask off to paint the inside black.
The generators forward from the "black dash" models are all green. Again, the change was assembly. The black gennys were bolted on after the tractor was painted. At the black dash model, they bolted the gennys on before painting.
The dash color should not be gloss. If you have ever seen one painted gloss at night, you will know why.
It is a Blitz Black as close as I can tell and that is what I use.

Oh no. The reason you don't see it in owners manuals is because they are in Black and White. I bought an original 630 in 1995. It was Black behind the lights because I checked. The fellow that painted it for me also ask if I wanted to keep them Black. Which I did. I wanted it as close to original as I could get and for that to happen they had to be Black. Of this I am sure. Here is a before and after picture.

You can't tell the color even in color pictures but trust me, they are Black in both pictures.

Kinda interesting that the propane tank paint seems to of held up alot better then the rest.

Probably because it is a different metal and maybe the LPG keeps it a tad cooler in this Texas sun.

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like my generator needs to be painted green. Ill check ou the satin black paint for the dash and steering column. I, personally, like the black behind the lights and will likely do that, since there isn't one solid answer. My 530, 630, and 730 booklet from Deere looks black behind the lights - but these are hand-colored images.

What do you mean there is no solid answer? The guy has an original in original paint, and the rest are guessing.

yes, this is true. and im going by how his tractor is painted. It just seems there is a lot of debate or disagreement.

I wanted to clarify the steering column color as black (blitz black specifically). I have seen some any pictures of restored tractors some with green steering columns and some with black steering columns. While I'm not the correct police, I would like to get the paint mostly correct. Additionally, the Operator's Manual (while being B&W) shows the steering column being darker than the tractor (implying black).

Thanks, Bob
