4020 oil pan

Here's the deal-I have a '64 4020 with an M & W turbo currently apart. I'm thinking of replacing the original 2 gallon oil pan. I believe the console 4020's were 3 gallon? Am I correct, and if so does a newer pan fit? Or is my only option the M &W pan?

(quoted from post at 09:27:33 02/03/23) Last I seen M&W oil pan were selling for around $5000.00

Selling price and asking price are 2 different critters............

I would like to see documentation from anyone of a proven 5K sale.

A good m&w pan will cost around $2000. There was an IH one that sold for around $5000 on a online auction recently. In checking the Deere online parts catalog the part number is the same for both early and late 4020 oil pans. Tom

No way early vs. late 4020 had the same pans when each was built. 8qt vs. 12 qt.

This topic was discussed over 10 years ago. They were only stocking the late model pan already back then.

Could very well be. I just looked up the part numbers from the online parts catalog. I will give a check to my parts catalogs in the shop and
check for older part numbers. Tom

I am not knowledgeable enough to make that call. Google search "4020 oil capacity". The first thing that comes up is discussions from right here on YT. Consensus from 2011 is that Deere only stocks the large pan as a replacement. So it "should" work on the older ones. YMMV.

Unless your going to be running this tractor at a heavy load for hours on end, it's not worth the cost to upgrade to the larger oil pan. Even if you do run it hard, change the oil more frequently. You'll be fine. When i was twisting wrenches for a Deere dealer we saw quite a few old 4020's with turbos and the engines held up fine. The biggest problem we saw was the PTO clutch failing under heavy PTO use. Good Luck John

There's that possibility too. This one was leaking coolant out one of the block weep holes, and we decided to do a teardown. Upon examination, we found some very rough main bearings, and suspect perhaps the tractor got low on oil at some point prior to me owning it. Or that the oil got too hot? My thought was if I could find a 3 gallon pan reasonably, it might be smart. After all, Deere upped capacity later in the production run, and that was without the turbo.

If I am not mistaken, The difference in oil capacity is only due to the oil gauge difference, between the two genetations. This can be checked eadily, but I do not have a complete 4020 first gen engine.

The hicrop version has the AR28846 pan on both, and that is a 4010 number.

The oil pan gasket for the 4020 is used on 4320 as well as the 404's and 466's in the 30 and 40 series. These pans are obviously much larger in capacity. I would think you should be able to bolt one on and find one relatively easy.
