Part out my JD 40S or ?

I've got a John Deere 40S that appeared to be a really nice tractor when I bought it. It turned out to have a cracked head and, in order to not have that reveal itself, they had no coolant in it(I thought it was just low). I finally found a head for a reasonable number, so I tore it apart to swap the head. Turns out the top of the block was also cracked almost the entire length of the deck. So, I have $3,000 in a tractor with a cracked block. I have someone who will give me $2,000 for it as it sits. So, do I take the loss and move on or part it out and eventually get my money back(likely over a decade or so)?

FYI It's got the 2 lower 3 point arms, pretty nice sheet metal, good lights, 3 new tires and a 4th that has really deep tread but has a cut on the inside, good radiator, generator, ignition system.

My GUESS is that you will spend as much time parting it out as you would spend fixing the engine. So three years from now would you rather have a bad taste in your mouth and a little money in the bank - or a little less money in the bank and a nice tractor to putt-putt around on?

Scroll down the page and you'll see a John Deere 420 post. Tom replied and will most likely have a good block. Contact him.

You're already in too deep so you might as well finish what you started.

Try to get ahold of Dave Cook. He lives in northern WI and specializes in Deere Dubuque tractors. Years ago I bought a running engine for a friend from him. Seems like maybe we had to update to a 420 engine. His price was good and he has a great reputation. Tom
