M and brushhog

I've used a 5' King Cutter behind my M for years.Depends on what you plan to cut, few times It will work the snot out of it. If you use your head it will do fine.

Think about not having live PTO.
If one open field is what you are going to cut - it won't make much difference.

If it's an orchard with trees all over the place - your left leg will get tired.

Is the King unit just a pull behind or are you able to raise it and lower it with the draw bar hydraulic height adjuster? Can you provide a photo?

I have used a 5' King Cutter on my JD430. It works it sometimes depending upon the conditions and believe it has more HP than M. No live PTO not ideal but works fine on 430 without it. You do need to get an over running clutch for PTO though

I run a 4-foot mower on my M using the shop-built 3-point hitch and it works well even in tall, heavy material. As Hayfarmer noted having an over-running clutch on the PTO shaft is mandatory to prevent the mower from propelling the tractor forward when you clutch to stop. The M's PTO shaft is in a non-standard location so depending on your hitch geometry you might need to shorten the mower's driveline a bit to prevent bottoming it out, especially after you add the over-running clutch.

Mine is 3 point, yes it raise's it fine. I too shortened the PTO shaft for my over running pto Clutch. I have front wheel weights but don't use them, it will make the front end VERY lite, I just keep the caster wheel on the ground for the most part. If I have real tough stuff to hog, I use a bigger tractor & cutter. Like the 5' because my tractor is set at 59 wide. ALSO I created a bent style upper top link, my M has a tool box under the seat when raised all the way it would cause damage to the box if the top link was straight. My M came some kind of a 3 point kit that fastens to the original drawbar frame.

my opinion is that an M is not a good tractor for a bush hog. to mow my barnlot, first gear is toooo slow...second gear is too fast. It was ok to mow the roadsides but no a large open area. because it is a four speed. now,,,,,the 430 with the five speed was a good with a mower

A healthy M will spin a 5 foot hog like it's not there and a ^' in normal cutting circumstances fine, use an ORC for safety of course. Either a tow behind or you can add an after market 3ph quite easily.

oops! sorry I lost track of what forum I was on,,,was thinking Farmall M lol. ran a 5' hog on Dad's MT for years with no issue,,,bigger issue was getting on and off the thing!

We had a JD M for a few years, and I built a 3-point and a cultivator for it. I put our 5 foot King Kutter on it once, it would barely lift it with the top link connected. So, I was using it without a top link, the bottom corner of the cutter hit a stump, and the top link bracket came foreword and hit the back of the seat. I should have had a telescoping top link, or a chain through a pipe, or something. But, the M didn't really have enough HP for the 5 foot cutter anyhow, we have heavy grass and some brush in N MN.
