I have replaced a 1010 john deere clutch plate ,pressure plate , release bearing and resurfaced the flywheel and set the clutch fingers with the jd227 gauge and adjusted
the pedal freepaly and the gears still grind when you try to put it in gear . The clutch we replaced had washers between the pressure plate and the flywheel which we did
not put back in . does anyone know what could be the problem with the new clutch .

I don't see where you replaced the pilot. If that's dragging, the shaft won't stop spinning.

Is it grinding or dragging to the point you nearly cannot get it in gear and wants to drift forward with the clutch in? If so then yes there is something wrong. If not that severe if once you put it in gear and continue to hold down the clutch then place it in neutral then try to shift it in gear again. If it does not grind by doing these steps the clutch is releasing. That is not a synchronized transmission, it will grind until the clutch plate and shaft spin down to a stop. If you do not understand what I am saying I can post a longer version that lays out step by step how to test the clutch to see if it is releasing or dragging.

You cannot get it in gear it grinds an drifts just like you said . the clutch that we took out had washers between the flywheel and the pressure plate .

The flywheel has been resurfaced. Was the step depth checked to see that it was in within the spec depth? Maybe it was not correct previously, thus the washers that are not shown in the parts catalog.
