friend's gas 4020 died and won't restart

So I took a look. They put on a new rotor and cap. I get a strong spark out of the coil wire when I open the points with a
screwdriver. It has good gas flow to carb. They tried to get it to fire on starting fluid but nothing. Spark plugs not fouled. It
was running just fine then he had it idling when it died and won't restart. Seems to me the most likely cause is a piece of rust
in the carb. But I don't know if those gas engines will normally try to fire on starting fluid. Suggestions?

Is the distributor turning? If so put a test light on the coil terminal that the wire coming out of the distributor connects to, should flash on off as the points open and close while cranking with starter.

Its fire to the plug wires and plugs that matters NOT ONLY the coil IE there can be distributor or cap n rotor problems ???? See if all the plugs are firing ?? Is the dist okay ??? Is it turning ??? If so but no fire to plugs I suspect cap n rotor problems....

Take a look at my Ignition Troubleshooting

Are the points opening? They wear on the distributor cam especially if not lubed right. If no spark to the plugs, that is an easy thing to check.

Is the carb filling with gas? My gas 4020 with the MS carb has stuck the nettle valve before. I guess the rubber tip just sticks and blocks the flow. I think the float may hang up on the side. Not really sure what happed because disassembly cures the issue.
