John Deere HN

Could one of you HN owners tell me what the tire size is on an HN. It has the heavy cast wheel. I bought the tractor and couldnt pick it up that day so Im going back to get it. Forgot to get the tire size. I just want to be looking for the correct tire.

I picked up the HN today and it has the 6-12 tire on it. Does anyone know if this tire is available anywhere other than Firestone. The want a arm and leg for one.

If your serial number has only four digits (i.e, H-9999 or smaller), that means someone installed an HN single-wheel front pedestal onto what left the factory as an H. That's because the very first prototype HN was S/N H-11142 and the first actual production HN was S/N H-14874. So if you do a serial number research, your four-digit serial number will be reported as being built as an H, not an HN. However, for those who needed the single-wheel narrow front or for those who just like the looks of an HN, such a conversion is fine and there's nothing wrong with doing such a conversion. But those who want a documented, legitimate tractor would not consider it to be a true HN.

By the way, there were actually 1073 HN tractors built according to the count in the Serial Number Register, not 978 as was first reported many years ago. Unfortunately, that incorrect quantity has been copied over and over again by those who don't bother to check original sources. But HN tractors were fairly small portion (less than 2%) of the total H production.
