governor bearings H tractor

Not certain about what you are looking for, but here is some info. JD7150R was originally a New Departure-Hyatt three-piece, angular contact ball bearing assembly (NDH assembly P/N 909021), same as what was used for the outer front wheel bearings on very old Chevrolet cars. The NDH P/N for the cup was 909621, and the cone was 909521. That design is no longer available, but a substitute ball bearing using a different design is available from Deere at a very steep price.

Some years ago, someone started making a tapered-roller-bearing substitute. They started with a bearing that had the correct ID, but which was too narrow and the OD was too small, so an adapter sleeve was machined to compensate for the dimensional differences. Many suppliers are now furnishing this substitute bearing assembly for a more reasonable price. I am not positive, but I suspect the Timken part numbers used in this assembly are LM11749 (cone) and LM11710 (cup), but I have never seen one so I can not verify that those are the actual Timken parts being used. (There are two other Timken combinations that might be those used, but both those would require a fairly flimsy adapter sleeve.)
 
Glad you chimed in, Dan. I need a couple for mine and I've been checking with some car resto shops but nobody has been able to help. I've seen the tapered roller substitutes (Steiner, who I will not order from) and did some CAD layouts and came up with what you mentioned. Basically a cone to fit the shaft with it's mating cup and a sleeve to make up the OD and length. Easily made if I had acsess to a lathe. I'll send you a drawing if you like, just PM ne with your email. Can't attach a file on PMs here. I bought a governor at a local show last summer. It was in bad shape and the gears were all chewed but the fork looked good from the bottom and mine has some wear on the hooks. When I pulled it apart the upper finger on the fork was worse than mine so I figured I wasted $30 (guy wanted 50). It had a lot of old heavy oil and the shaft seemed to turn smooth. The bearings were pretty good so I'm using them. Worth the money.

Mike, thanks for the offer of a CAD drawing, but I believe I've got the basic dimensions. What I've sketched are obviously nominal dimensions as the bore of the adapter needs to be a press fit, probably around .001 interference. And when the cup is pressed into the adapter, it will expand a little, so the OD of the adapter will probably need to be slightly less than nominal to end up with the desired 1.8750 OD as an assembly.

Another thing that bothers me about this concept (and those being sold currently) is that the adapter sleeve is probably not hardened. This would be no problem for the LH governor bearing and the rear fan bearing applications, but the RH governor bearing is intended to float axially inside the slip-fit bore of the governor housing. Accordingly, that adapter should be hardened, or have a case hardening on the OD to prevent wear. However, that might not be a big problem as most of those applications aren't going to experience thousands of hours of operation anymore, so any wear that might occur on the OD will probably be inconsequential.

I don't think the slip fit on the right side bearing is real critical. I will not actually float after the left side it tightened and the force of the spring on the adapter will keep it from turning as long as the cup has a light press fit. A bit of loctite would remedy that. I just reassembled my A's governor and I could not budge that spring by hand, had to pull the cover in with the bolts.
