If your sitting on my tractor, the left gear shift lever just turns in circles (does nothing). Right lever is normal. Tractor wont move and cant engage the transmission. Clutch is fine. Any ideas as to what may have broke?

No direct experience with your tractor looking at the
JD online parts page of the diagram I selected is
correct it looks likely that a pin has sheared or came
out of place. There are 3 transmission options for your
tractor so I am not sure this is the correct diagram. You
can navigate to other diagrams by using the left or
right arrows near the top.

Thanks - I pulled the housing and all pins are fine and the shaft is turning. Let me add something. Gear Range selector appears to be stuck in the "A" position. The lever will pull out and move to what would be B & C, but when I go back to "A", Cannot move the shifter back to the neutral area. I think it may be something under the top cover, like a fork or gear stuck. Tractor will not move in any gear, including where it is now. I don't have a manual so diagrams would help. I fairly mechanically inclined, just need to know where to start.

Thanks for everyones input.

Thanks for everyones input.

Back in January this year used red MN gave you a link to the parts catalog (5200, 5300, 5400 and 5500 Tractors - PC2332) for your 5400. I am thinking short of you purchasing a technical manual for your tractor it has about the best/most diagrams you will get, unless someone has a manual and they are able/willing to take pictures of for you. The John Deere publication number for the 54400 Technical Manual is TM1520.

You can get the manual direct from the JD bookstore. Go to https://techpubs.deere.com/ . Click on the Equipment Publications tab. When that page opens enter 5400 in the box beside Model # and search. You should get a dropdown list of equipment with 5400 in the model #. Click on 5400 at the top of the list, that should open another list of just 5400 items. Look down the list for Tractors - Base Units for North America (guessing you have a NA unit), to pick from, select yours. When it opens the list of manuals available. If you don't have an Operator's Manual you can download a free copy. To the right of title it should say Download. Click on Download and you can download and save a free copy of the Operator's Manual. If you want a book or CD the prices for those are shown below that, they are not free. Further down the list is the TM. Click on the title and it will show you the format options and prices for purchase from there. You may find a used original copy of that manual on eBay. Beware of some of the low priced electronic copies they may be incomplete or total rip offs.

Here is another link to PC2332.
