Does a G starter only need the power cable from the battery to work mine doesn t have ground wire that I see. My starter was working now it s not only cable I see goes to battery. Yes battery is fully charged. If you put 12 volts to the copper lug on the starter (under starter button)should it spin the starter?

The ground is provided where the starter attaches to the tractor. Make sure the surfaces are clean and the ground wire connection to your battery is too!

Also where the ground cable connects to the frame must be clean and able to conduct the current. It's usually a battery case bolt on a styled G.

It cranked then 5 minutes later starter is silent will check ground.anyway to check starter before taking off to take to shop?

If you have a battery ground cable thathooks to the battery box, loose it. Get a little longer cable that will reach a bolt/nut where the rockshart comes out of the main case. I learned that the ground of the battery
and the ground of the starter to the frame can look good but just not be there anymore. Like women, good electrical connections aren't based entirely on looks.

As susandiane said, if your battery is attached to the battery box, it may not be completing an electrical circuit. The battery box is notorious for rusting and corroding where it attaches to the rear housing, causing a lack of electrical continuity. Use a ground wire long enough to reach from the battery to the rear case, which will bypass this problem spot.

I had the ground problem and instead of different ground cable I just took the
the box off and cleaned things up good and reinstalled it and no more
problems. And still kept correct ground cable instead of a easy man nom
orignal fix.
