Who knows what the oil filter bolt screws into on the top of the oil filter body? Seems to be similar to a square fender not held inside a clip. As we all know when the clip gives out they are a bear to remove. When removing my filter, the exterior nut under the filter cup turned and turned without loosening. I had to bump it with an impact. Now I can't get it back together because whatever I'm trying to screw into is floating around. Don't think I'm interested in removing oil lines from the top of the filter body and dropping it out...

You're giving up too quick. Take the crankcase cover off and look it over - one step at a time. You can fix it!

No clips. Either your shaft is stripped or the cast is stripped cracked.
Picks are from a -46 B, threads into center of left piece

I don't know if you've been into the oil filter head area. Here's a picture of the oil filter head in my 1953 JD 50, but the crankshaft and rods have already been removed. As you can see, if the crank and rods were in place, the area would be pretty congested. I imagine that your JD B would look about the same inside the crankcase.

The bolt just screws into the filter head. Usually when the bolt spins, it's because the filter head is broken from over tightening the filter cap.

There is a filter head on top of the oil filter canister. A long stud it threaded into it. Sounds like it unscrewed there. Look at the parts book page on partscatalog.deere.com.

The bolt screws directly into the Filter Head Cover? #8
Anyone ever had the filter head cover apart to know what's supposed to be holding the female 'nut' in place/ any chance of fixing this without major disassembly?

Actually, #19. The Filter Head has a nut somehow attached in the bottom?

I'm pretty sure that the filter head, #19, is itself threaded for the long bolt rather than there being a nut for it to screw into.

Today's Featured Article - Timing Your Magneto Ignition Tractor - by Chris Pratt. If you have done major engine work or restored your tractor, chances are you removed the magneto and spark plug wires and eventually reached the point where you had to put it all back together and make it run. On our first cosmetic restoration, not having a manual, we carefully marked the wires, taped the magneto in the position it came off, and were careful not to turn the engine over while we had these components off. We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t ...
