Classification as Iron Horse?

I know JD 4440 was referred to as the "iron Horse". On another forum I was told all "40 series rowcrop tractors" were referred to being Iron Horses. I thought it was only 4440's.
Thanks for any replies, Jim

I recall the poster that the dealers had up when those were in production. All the row crops were under the banner of Iron
Horses. Probably could find such a poster on ebay.

The 1978 US-market brochure for the 40-series said The New Iron Horses - More Horses More Iron on the cover. Deere also filed for a trademark (now cancelled) on that
term.

The term was not used in the 1979 brochure, or in any of the European brochures that I have.

The 10 and 20 series were marketed as the New Generation of Power. With the introduction of the 30 series and the Sound Guard Cab, marketing referred to them as Generation II. With the 40 series being so similar in appearance to the 30 series, marketing needed a hook to differentiate them, so the New Iron Horses came to be. But at the end of the day, these were all just marketing tools.

Tim, I have an introductory brochure for the 40 series
that makes comparisons with the 30 series on weight,
wheel base, hydraulics, engines. The Iron horses did
have more iron in them, hence the reason for the iron
horse name. We did end up buying a 4640.

Never heard Iron Horse connected to any new tractors but I remember reading
about a tractor made in possibly the teens or 20's that had the brand name of
Iron Horse. Did not last long and was not popular.

Jim I know when Deere sold the 4440 design to a firm in China, they called it the iron bull I believe. had one on site at Des Moines Works for a while.

All the 40 series row crop tractors were advertised as Iron Horses,,it's my opinion that the 40 Series were the best most dependable tractor series Deere ever built.
