I have a 4430, that lately when I try to start it the engine makes a load Ka Chunk - Ka chunk - ka chunk noise as it turns over. After 2-3 times of this it starts normally. Any ideas?

Check for coolant in the oil.

Check the flywheel ring gear for damage.

Check for a damaged starter drive or ''bad''; starter bushings.

Check the hydraulic pump drive coupling.

Thanks for the good ideas Wore Out!

If there was coolant in the oil do you think it would be evident looking at the dipstick?

Thanks!
Rich
