4230 Hi/Lo and hydraulics

I have a 1978 jd 4230 quadrange and recently noticed it slipping in low ranges (1 & 3) when it gets hot. Hear a whirring (overspeed) noise from the transmission. It works fine in hi range 2/4. Ive heard about the tube slipping off but not sure if that is only for hi range problems.
I dont know if it is related but the hydraulics have gotten kind of slow. 3 pt and steering seem fine but the rear SCVs are hooked to my loader and working slow.
Anybody have any suggestions on where to start? Im planning to check the screen on the transmission first.
Thanks for any help

I suggest to check trans pump pressure with hyd hi-lo in both low & high speeds. Low speed slippage could be low trans pump pressure or worn linings. I also suggest to check stand-by pressure & set it at 2350 psi.

. Unplug the loader supply at the SCV . Do the tractor problems remain ?
Is the filter half plugged with ice crystals ?

Yes, it still has the problem with the loader disconnected.
Texas, no ice crystals around here. Thanks for the input!
