4020 Fuel Gauge-Positive or Negative Ground

You will get the right gauge from Evergreen Restorations, - if you correctly describe the voltage to Jerry. If you're diagnosing your problem, it could also be with the sender in the tank. Both
the gauge and the sender must match including the voltage and polarity.

I believe that the first series 4020 gas and diesel used a fuel gauge designed for a positive ground system. The second series used a negative ground system and a fuel gauge designed to work with a negative ground. Of course, many have been changed. If it is an early tractor converted to an alternator, I would expect a negative ground system which will require the installation of a fuel gauge designed for negative ground. I have converted a 65 gas 4020 to an alternator and had to change the fuel gauge, the new negative ground fuel gauge worked fine with the original sending unit.

To know for certain what voltage and polarity you have at
sender put positive lead of voltmeter on wire going to sender
with sender unplugged key switch on and negative on a
ground. If its reverse polarity most meters read -12.0v
meaning current is flowing in reverse through your meter.
Negative ground would read 12v. Also checks if you have 12
or 24 volts
