Coolant in oil 4020

69 4020 ranch tractor, no gauges. Did some heavy brush cutting with 14 shredder and noticed water pump was leaking. Radiator was a little low so topped it off, didn’t seem hot so shut it down. Next day, used it for about 30 minutes to finish up some light stuff and shut it down, pulled the water pump. Got home and ordered one. During this time we had a freeze come in mid 20 s to 34 then back to mid 20 s for about 48hrs. I only had the water in the system and didn t drain the bottom of block through petcock.

Installed the new pump, added ELC red coolant and distilled water, checked the oil, (it may have already been mixing because I remember thinking the oil looked newer than I remembered) and fired it up. Let it run for 10m went and checked for leaks and noticed steam coming out of the bottom breather tube, opened oil filler and it was mixed so shut it down.

I confirmed water pump was installed correctly but don t know what my next steps are.

Any help, advice would be appreciated.

Ditto leaking engine oil cooler, cylinder liners or liner seals is probably the problem. I hope having straight water in cooling system for 48 hrs @ 20°F didn't crack block between cylinder liners openings.

If the block was filled with water and it was in the 20's for 48 hours, I'm thinking its going be complicated. Sorry.

If it has green antifreeze in it at one time then you put in rad that will cause major problems and jell the coolant. Also as said if it only had water and was below freezing you may have a cracked head and or block or sleeve or all of those

i would say the next step is to look for another engine. water will turn into a solid block at that temperature and expands and will split
cast wide open.
its nots even worth the time to tear that on apart.

okay, thanks for the replies. Will head out there tomorrow, drop the pan, and pressure test the system. We had mid 70's before the front came in and during the 48hr event temps came just above freezing for a few hours right about in the middle so hoping it was enough to save the block. Good info on the coolant. I had flushed it pretty good before adding the red, it was what I had on hand and due to the leaks I don't think it would have had much if any green coolant in it anyway. I'll try to keep y'all posted. Thanks again.

The freezing water may have also damaged the engine
oil cooler, see link. This usually leads to the issue of oil
in the coolant/radiator. This would most likely show up
after the engine has been run due to the oil pressure is
higher than the coolant pressure.
JD 404 oil cooler

I am going to suggest one other possibility. You had a pin hole in a sleeve that let compression into the radiator which pushed the seal out
of the water pump. New water pump with a good seal and maybe this time the coolant went into the oil. I have had 2 different Deere tractors do
that. Tom

Check the oil coolers as others said and if not, that pull the pan and pressurize the coolant system and see if it's the liner o rings
