JD 630 transmission screaming

I bought a JD 630 at auction and hauled it home. I topped it off with oil, and disked 6 acres. It pulled well in 4th gear, with no real tranny noise. Afterwards I found that more than 4 quarts of Eng. oil had transferred into the tranny.

I took out the side plug, drained tranny down to proper level and topped off the engine oil. I took the tractor down road to show the neighbor and found the tranny noisy in 5th gear and very noisy in 6th gear.

I tore down the engine, found worn main bearings and oil seal. I removed all tranny covers and jacked rear wheels. I removed the Power- Trol. The differential gears and bearings also seem fine. I checked all gears and bearings, found nothing obvious.

My question is, what is the most likely source of the loud whining noise when in 5th or 6th gear? It's not whining in all gears, just the top two.

Nature of the beast? My 630 whines loudest in the higher gears, but not what
I consider excessive....after all, those gearboxes are 60 plus years old
and could have easily over 10000 hours.

I put couple cans of STP in the 1st reduction gear house, it helps.. I have a Black Dash 620 That
it made a world of improvement.

I don't know the answer to your question,
but please keep us posted on your
project. I have just started tearing into
my 620. It is a whiner too. Last week I
managed to get the shift forks out of
alignment, so while I have the lid off. .

Gear teeth.. Yes, 60 year old-worn-flat teeth on 5 and 6 speed gears, the drive and driven gears will whine...

Since all looks OK inside and if not used in cold-weather, I would put in the thickest weight transmission oil and as said, STP ???

Posted above is a transmission breakdown for a B. Your 630 is a decendant of an A, and very similar. I'd look closely at the bearings number 12, 14, and 24. When in gears 5 and 6, you are using gears
furthest from these bearings... way to the left of the case, actually outside the case. It's my speculation that wear in the area of 12 and 14 would express itself when the load as actually coming from the
far end of the shaft, causing different deflection than using a gear closer to the bearing.

Just a theory from a dairy farmer...

There is nothing wrong with it. I have a 630 and it does the same thing and has for many years. I read one time and i believe it was on this site that some of those
transmission had cut gears while others had ground gears or something along that line. Cant remember if it was the cut or ground gear that makes the noise.

I also read that these transmissions were loud right off the factory floor. Many customers complained to the dealers after purchase that something was wrong with the
transmissions. Some tractors were brought back to the dealers and had a complete tear down of the transmissions and all new factory parts re installed and they were still
loud. It was then determined that it was either the cut or ground gears that was the problem. i just cant remember which one it was.
