I bought a JD 630 at auction and hauled it home. I topped it off with oil, and disked 6 acres. It pulled well in 4th gear, with no real tranny noise. Afterwards I found that more than 4 quarts of Eng. oil had transferred into the tranny.
I took out the side plug, drained tranny down to proper level and topped off the engine oil. I took the tractor down road to show the neighbor and found the tranny noisy in 5th gear and very noisy in 6th gear.
I tore down the engine, found worn main bearings and oil seal. I removed all tranny covers and jacked rear wheels. I removed the Power- Trol. The differential gears and bearings also seem fine. I checked all gears and bearings, found nothing obvious.
My question is, what is the most likely source of the loud whining noise when in 5th or 6th gear? It's not whining in all gears, just the top two.
