530 engine problem

Sorry I did not give enough info on my 1959 John Deere engine problem in my earlier post. It's the
one with 1700 hrs that is blowing black smoke at idle. I had done a tune up consisting of plugs,
wires, cap, button, points, condenser, timing. Two different rebuilt carbs---same result. Tractor
runs great and pulls fine, doesn't act like it's loading up. At higher RPM it does not smoke. I
thought maybe the air way was plugged so I took the intake pipe loose at the carb and pulled it away
from the carb--still smokes really black like it's flooding out but runs fine. Again, any suggestion
would be appreciated. I don't want to kick a dead horse with you, but I'm baffled.

My little JD 50 was acting up in a similar fashion last summer. The condenser was the problem. I dug an old condenser out of my junk box and it has ran good ever since.

Good morning John and happy new year. Maybe you got some bad fuel. I would think if the condenser was bad it wouldn't fire at all. Does the plugs carbon up? Maybe a hotter plug would help? Just a thought.

When was the last overhaul? It might be time for piston rings if is really black. Air cleaner free of ice or blockages? Does it go away when run with just carb no air cleaner for a minute?
