720 picture problem.

Having some fun with the steering on my 720. Its a long story so Im hoping to have a little fun with the John Deere knowledge on this site. Im going to ask you if you can see whats wrong in the picture I post. Not trying to cause trouble just wanting to have a little fun with the John Deere brain trust on the site. Thanks for playing along.

Pretty sure Coonie is correct, the turning circle would be rather large, even using the brakes. I just did one of these and those two large bolts were snapped off, ruined the housing.

Hi coonie minnie. That is exactly what is wrong. Turned great to the left but only about half as far to the right. This picture has them in the right way.

Now I get to figure out whats going on with the steering valve worm gear assembly. When I turn to the left the splined coupler part of the valve assembly is in where it should be. Then when I turn to the right it comes out about a 1/4 of an inch. I believe this is why Im having trouble adjusting the valve. Im enjoying this project but my old Massey Harris tractors with manual steering are looking pretty good right now. Lol.

First thing I would do is replace that bolt with a roll pin as Deere intended. Looks like it is rubbing the head and possibly the nut also.

You may want to speak with Richard Duane (410-643-2899) about the control valve situation. He's an expert on this things and can supply needed parts.

Do you know if you have the original type or the ''improved'' steering worm and actuating sleeve?

Do you have the John Deere Two Cylinder Power Steering Manual, SM-2050?

Hi wore out. I do not know if it is the improved one or not. Ive only owned this tractor since April. I dont own the steering manual but a good friend of mine has one. He
just needs to find it. Thanks for your help.

Thanks deeretails for the information. It kinda fun taking this stuff apart for the first time and learning about it even if you have to take it apart more than once. Lol.

i see what your talking about. but now wondering why the left pin is sticking up. first time i saw this p.s. apart.

The ''left'' pin sticks up as it ''dowels'' into the top assembly for support.

It is a ''lock plate'' (Key #19), that fits under the heads of the two bolts that secure the moveable van to the steering shaft.

After the bolts are tightened the corners of the ''lock plate'' are bent over heads of the bolts to secure them from loosening.
