John Deere 50 overheating

I have a later model 50 (live PTO) that overheats quickly when used. I am not familiar with the cooling system on this tractor. I have been told it's not "normal". Usually, I'd swap the thermostat first, then see if the water pump is bad.

Anyone have any knowledge of this situation?

In my opinion your judgement is correct. If your 50 has a thermostat? If it heats up rather
quickly & the fluid level is Full, I would start with the thermostat.

How long since the last radiator flush? When I first bought my 50, if overheated quickly and the problem was a corroded/plugged radiator core.

Always, always, always check the simple things first if you have no idea where to start. Open the cap when it is running and warmed up. If the fluid isn't moving you then check the pump and thermostat. If it is moving, then then it may be a fouled radiator. If you see bubbles surging up, you probably have a head gasket issue. These things will take further measures to confirm, but by doing that one simple thing first, you learn quite a bit through minimal effort.
