Need Part Numbers

Anyone know what the part numbers are for a rear main crankshaft seal and a oil seal for the transmission for a 1940 JD L?

Mine is dripping a bit and I want to change the seals. Can't find part numbers.

Did you look on the John Deere parts site?

We talked about this before, it is unclear to me what rear crankshaft seal is used in your Hercules engine, the seal for the similar/later DEERE engine IS shown, dunno if it's the same or not.

You should be able to find whatever transmission seal you are needing there, as well.

Look in section ''Differential Assembly - 57''.

yeah, still not sure if there is one or not. I think I'm going have to open it up to see what is in there.

Thanks for pointing me to the correct spot in the parts catalog.

The seal numbers I come up with for the engine is Al2356T for the rear seal, and Al2426T for the front seal, assuming you are working with the Hercules engine. They don't seem to cross
over to anything currently made. May want to contact Ridenour's Tractor parts, 513-988-0390.

AL2356T is still available from DEERE for some $10.

AL2426T apparently crosses to Timken or National 6704 or SKF 11366.

Dunno about the ''rubber band'' part, though!

Going back to the parts catalog, it seems AL2356T is the split front seal used up to S.N. 629004, then one-piece seal AL2426T was used through S.N. 639,999, apparently with some overlap.

So, that still leaves us without a rear seal for the pre-640,000 engines. Wonder if it was simply a ''slinger'' or ''labyrinth'' design?

Thanks for that info. Yes, mine is a pre-640000 and that is what is throwing me off. I wonder if it is only a slinger on the pre models. It drips oil if I fill it up, but stops at about 1/3 mark on the dipstick.

Think I will take it apart to see what is in there.

I have two issues. First I'm leaking some oil from the final drive differential where the drive shaft connects. I'm looking at the parts catalog and it shows two oil seals: AL2122T and AL2123T. I'm assuming the AL2122T is the one I need and is the outer seal.

Secondly, we've been talking about a rear main seal or slinger. I pulled the flywheel off. It is not the normal end of a crankshaft and seal. There is another flanged out part. I'm not sure if that needs pulled off or if that is part of the crank. If part of the crank then I don't know how I would get a seal or even a flange on that. Trying to locate that section in the parts manual.

I know nothing about an L but be
aware that sometimes Deere used an
outer dust seal along with the
inner seal that keeps the oil in.
You may need both.
