730 Diesel probable head gasket issue

Well, with 725 hours on the complete overhaul, I now have bubbling and pressure in the radiator. Fingers crossed it is only the gasket. No coolant showing up yet in the oil or cylinders. I have not yet started searching for parts and would like to hear from others where they are getting gaskets these days. Are the lead washers still being used? Thanks.

I hate those sandwich style gaskets. I have had some issues with them in the past even when the head and
block were resurfaced.

Olson gaskets; lead washers used... Did you use glue on your head gasket?? Did you retorque the head nuts on a hot engine..

Can't recall the details. It was 20 years ago. Olson Gasket website only shows parts for letter series gas tractors, no Diesels listed.

I have a Neighbour that runs a JD 70 Diesel, that runs a JD 720 updated Head. He was having issues with bubbles in the
Coolant.
There were THREE problems...
# 1 No Coolant thermostat......Installed Thermostat.....
# 2 Retorque Head Gasket after coolant reached 180 deg F.... Twice.
# 3 Installed head gasket that was designed for JD 720 HEAD...Head gasket for original JD 70 Diesel will not work on
updated head..

Bob..

Well, the time has come to pull the 730 apart. Fingers crossed I find just a failed head gasket. What can I check beyond the head and block for being straight? My fear is that I will find a bigger problem. I had a JD 60 many years ago that cracked the block in the web between both bores right below a head stud. Don't want a repeat of that right now.

1. It still is not showing any coolant in the crank case. Yay!!!

2. What gasket goop do guys use these days on head gaskets?

3. The block assembly in it was purchased at the now defunct Central Tractor in Indianola IA. I recall at least 1 of the bores had a sleeve in it. Would that have any bearing on a failure after 700 odd hours?

4. Fingers crossed!

Hardened washers and nuts that are clean and lubed .

Has some Bubba or Billy Bob been tightening with a pipe
On a socket wrench handle . Instead of using a torque wrench ?

   Ha, ha! No it was done properly about 20 years, and 700 hours ago. Something let loose to pressurize the rad. No water coming out though, hopefully that is a good sign. I will have the head off within the hour, and see what's up.

I've had good luck with Permatex Copper Spray A Gasket.
My old Deere Service manager suggested and swore by metallic silver paint. YMMV
