Rear Main Seal Conditioner

Has anyone tried the Bar's Leaks Rear Main Seal, or any other product that is formulated to stop the seal from leaking? Trying to decide on buying a bottle and try to stop the rear main from leaking or if I should just tear into it and replace it.

My opinion is you can fix the oil leak now or fix it later. Stop leaks are a tractor jockeys best friend. If it is a small leak or seep it will probably stop or slow it for now. It should be fixed correctly

I found a front main seal on here for the L, but I did not find one for the rear. Been searching for a rear seal.

Lucas engine oil additive. I had one leaking practically in a stream. Two days later it was sealed right up.

You are right. It is hard to tell if there is a seal there or not. I haven't found any yet in the parts listing. Oil is streaming out of the hole in the bottom of the bell housing, seems like there would be a seal there.

Looks like your 1940 tractor would have a Hercules engine, I believe the front seal sold here is for the later John Deere engine.

Hercules was used through Serial # 634840, in 1941.

It's unclear to me, looking at the parts catalog if they used a rear seal on the Hercules engine.

Mine is a stream from bottom hole in the bell housing. I figured nothing would fix that. Are you talking about the Lucas Oil 10278: engine oil stop leak?

I don't know what the number is on the bottle, but it's probably the stuff. That other stuff is what I used one time that melted
the seal and left it stuck to a shaft I think.

be careful using seal conditioners they work ok on a hardened seal but not on a worn out one, i put some in the front axle of a pickup to stop a slow leak on the pinion seal, worked like a charm for about a
year, them had to replace all 3 seals in the gear case as it turned the rubber to a soft gum.

Yeah, I'm very cautious about using it. I'd rather change it, but I'm having a hard time finding a rear main seal for the motor.
