Continuing Saga on JD L

Starting a new thread here since it is a different topic. I got this L started by pull starting it. Ran it for 15 min or so, shut it off, and still having a hell of a time starting by hand/cranking. It ran fine when I pull started (no smoke and sounded nice). Any tips or suggestions for hand starting?

Assuming this has a mag, then the impulse is weak? Had a B that was hard starting by hand, but would start right up with a pull. I sent the mag to a place in Omaha Neb.

Yes, it appears to snap nicely and loud.

(quoted from post at 06:03:55 11/20/22) Does the impulse coupling make a good loud clank when it trips? Open it up and check the spring and dogs, it's not complicated.

What I have done with troublesome magnetos, is remove them from the tractor and bring them into the shop and clamp into a bench vise. I also bring in the plugs and wires and attach a jumper wire from the mag to each plug for a complete circuit, and you never want to discharge a mag without a load of some sort connected or you can create coil issues. Being inside allows me to control the lighting the better to see the spark at the plug plus being able to do so while turning the mag over by hand. Check coil spring tension, impulse operation, points, condenser, and also check to see if the shaft is turning freely or if it drags from worn bearings. WARNING! Make sure the area is free of all metal filings or they can get pulled into the mag and create havoc. Learned this the hard way.
