2630 Shifter Issue

It has the "Park" Slot on the left shifter.

I have replaced the shim kit John Deere part RE18116 two different times. The retainer came out again recently and is lost to the world of brush and weeds. I have ordered another kit but am getting weary of laying down $50+ every time this happens. I have read that this is an indicator that the top housing, specifically where the shifter is inserted, is worn & needs to be replaced. The part is $500+ for new and from $200 -$500 used, which is a gamble due to potential wear as well. Is there a workaround for this? Could I use a stronger keeper such as a snap ring keeper, or would that be inviting a problem of another order? Thanks in advance for your help.

I put a regular snap-ring in them. You may have to custom grind ends of SR to give you a prying
point to remove it but a good stout snap-ring with a new upper socket / part above lever ball joint
works well for me. Nothing to loose all to gain! DW

I take a dremel tool or similar and clean/square up the groove in the shift cover then use an old wrist pin snap ring trimmed to fit. Sometimes can even install the original snap ring under the repair
one if the cover is worn enough.
