3010 Diesel won't start

Have a 1963 3010 diesel that has run perfectly and always starts.

Last used it in May to plow the pumpkin patch and then parked it in the barn for the Summer. Plugged in the block heater for about four hours this weekend and with a fully charged battery tried to get it to start. No joy....

Using the hand primer on the fuel pump, I can get fuel out of the fuel filter vent and the input side of the injector pump. There does not seem to be fuel getting to the injectors since it will crank and crank and not start. Got full fuel tank and have checked all the usual suspects.

The barn was real hot this summer and the tractor acts like it has vapor lock.

Anybody got any ideas on what to try?

Appreciate the help.

It's been my experience with primer pumps that they don't get used enough. Then when you try, you have to force them to move which in turn pulls the stem out of the plunger! So stem goes up and down but pumps nothing. I would check the primer pump 1st. GL.

(quoted from post at 07:12:12 11/03/10) No smoke out of the stack while cranking. Which it always use to do.

You did move throttle lever out of stop position? Have you checked throttle linkage? I've seen the little ball joints pop off from wear.

Took the right side panel off and watched the throttle and fuel shutoff linkage movement to make sure they worked properly.

Mail me your phone number and I"ll help you with it, I"m not sure of where you are with the trouble shooting...

Tim,

Tried to send two previous emails and I don"t think they went through. I am not always available by phone due to my work hours. Hopefully we can do this through the forum. Here is the situation:

- Tractor has always run very well and starts right up.
- Last used it in May for tillage work and then parked it in the barn. It shut down OK.
- Stayed in a hot metal pole barn all Summer.
- Tried to start it up last weekend. Plugged in the block heater until it was real hot to the touch and then spun the engine over.
- Exhaust flapper flapped but no smoke came out like it usually does. Never would start up.
- Fuel tank is 3/4 full and fuel filter is low hours. Primed the fuel line with hand primer lever on fuel pump and got fuel out of the fuel filter vent and the input line of the injector pump.
- Took off right side cover and checked throttle linkage and fuel shutoff linkage. All is normal.
- Tried to start over and over but nothing.

I am not a diesel mechanic. Spent my life on gas engines. It is a fuel delivery problem to the injectors.

Any thoughts on things to try to narrow down the problem. Don"t want to start replacing parts for the sake of doing so.

Appreciate the help.

My computer was down yesterday,,I had the hood up on it till 2am this morning swapping hard drives and re-loading a couple operating programs,,I think it's okay for now,,I would rather change a 4020 clutch than deal with the computer,,,Have you made sure the engine stop cable has returned to the run position, the cable can get bound up behind the pump, if this looks good and you have fuel getting to the pump, which can be checked by loosening the fitting at the pump,,the one that comes from the filter,,if all that checks out I would give it some starting fluid and see if it will fire and run on that, once it fires on the fluid keep giving it a little to keep the engine running it won't hurt it to run a bit like this and it may give it a "burp" to let the fuel flow through the system. Sometimes the engine may turn over but not quite enough to let it actual fire up, the ether will help it along, open up your mail and I'll send my phone #

Not to hijack your thread but I'm having the same problem with the same model tractor, 1963 3010 diesel. Started and ran fine about 3 or 4 months ago. Batteries are down so I decided to pull start it. Had my wife pull it for over a mile with my pickup and it never hit a lick. Cracked a couple of fuel lines. Fuel both into and out of the fuel pump. I'm also at a loss.

Not really much of a hijack when the thread is 12 years old- more of a resurrection!

Yeah, I didn't notice the date until after I had posted. I found this thread via a search engine and didn't think about looking at the date until after I had posted. I started a new thread in the John Deere Tractors discussion board.
