Timing older JD with electronic ignition.

I have a late model A and B and I have electronic ignitions. The old method of timing where you line up marks on the flywheel and rotate the distributor does not work since I can't get a spark when moving the distributor. Is there a method I can use with a timing light?

If its an open flywheel ?? A timing light triggered off the Right cylinder aimed at where the flywheels LHI
and the flat mark on tractors side at 3 o clock (Thats TDC of right piston) will show where she's firing,
then rotate dist CCW to advance or CW to retard. You can make marks on the flywheel corresponding to say 10
20 and 30 BTDC to see when she fires relative to TDC flat at 3 o clock. Later models with covered flywheels
had little windows you opened with timing marks visible. That make any sense or help ?? No warranty Im rusty
on this stuff......

When I installed EI on my 70 I hooked up a timing light to #1 (left) and started it. After warm up took it to wide open throttle (high idle) to see if the fully advanced mark lined up. Then I idled it back to see of
the initial (static) marks lined up. It didn't exactly, and I didn't want to dink with lowering the idle becuase it had to be a bit over spec to operate my alternator, so I just left everything where it was and it
starts just like it did before. I would have been happy to leave the original ignition in it except that 1) good condensors are hard to find and 2) the coating on the points is so thin that touching them up with an
emery board to get home isn't an option--as my aching feet told me . . . Best wishes to you! The A is the best of all worlds in the lettered tractors, IMHO.

Opps my bad I meant LEFT at TDC when Flywheels LEFT Hand Impulse timing mark is at 3 o clock DUH to me lol
