John deere 494 corn planter

I have 3 acres I want to plant corn into for picking this fall
So I found a John deere 494 been used for a little sweet corn past ten years. I don't have a Manuel all I want to know is how to set it for 32000 plants per acre

From operators manual OM-855-958 for No-494 corn planter; the best you can do is 30000 population..
That is with 36 inch rows, planter set, shift lever at 4; drive sprocket on 18 tooth and driven sprocket
on 7 tooth , using a 16 cell seed plate; one seed per cell. Tractor speed 5 mph plus or minus... Use
this as a start point.. May need to change something??

Don't have a book handy but going to a 24 cell plate would give higher population. I think the last 494A's had sprocket drive rather than the gearbox? Tom

Yes and I hated that sprocket drive, very hard to use so I converted back to gear box and easy to set. Had 2 494 planters, one set for 40 for corn and one set for 30 for beans, got a 494A and left it set on 30 for all and went to 30 corn.

38 inch was the most common row width around home, NW Illinois, 20 miles East of Moline. Buddy that used to farm 30 acres of his Dad's farm had a 494 planter, planted 38 inch corn for 2-3 years, then double planted beans the next year, went over the field twice for 19 inch rows, he let the ag Co-Op's sprayer control the weeds, no cultivation.
Dad had a 490 planter, was first 4-row planter around in spring of '52. Dad and the neighbor rented 160 acres off a neighbor a couple years, then lost 80 to another neighbor who wanted to make his 240 a 320. But we kept farming the last 80 and now my Sister and I own it. NEIGHBOR always planted that 80 with his 494 pulled by his WD45. Dad could have planted half of it and I bet nobody could have told the difference.
The BIG Time Operator I worked for part time for 8-10 years had a 494 for planting corn. Hand his bean planter was a home-made 690, took two 490's and spliced them together as a 6 row 30 inch bean planter. He had a 6-30 front mounted bean cultivator he put on his 520 Deere, it really made that 520 pop and bang! We used our FARMALL SM-TA and 450, then 4010 diesel to cultivate our 4-38 corn & beans.
