1020 power steering question

I had my steering valve/housing apart on my later serial number 1020, but got it together and to me it seems like I have a lot of up and down movement in the steering shaft, the one where the steering wheel will attach. I have a manual to follow and added shims to the thrust bearings to correct that end play on them. I have probably 3/16 inch up and down in the shaft as I turn the shaft which seems like too much to me? This make about a 1/4 turn free on the shaft which would be 1/4 turn on the steering wheel. Anyone having a 1020 or similar tractor, could you check yours without it running and see if yours is this way too? I did this all meticulously, being clean and checking things, but dont want to install it on the tractor if there is going to be a problem or have wander on the road. Thanks for your help

I suppose you tightened top adjusting nut to correct specification(75 ft/lb)?

Design of operation requires steering shaft to move up/down a small amount in order to operate the two valve bodies inside of steering housing.

hello,, without the tractor running this is normal,, how much play when the tractor is running? when the tractor starts most of the play should go away..
