John Deere R Pony Engine Question

I want to change the oil in the pony engine, as well as the diesel engine of the 1952 R. I only have the Operator's Manual for it, but wish to clarify a couple things, since the Operator's Manual was written so many years ago:

1. Manual says to remove the starting engine drain plug, which is on top. I assume this is to allow air pressure to assist with draining the crankcase into the diesel engine, which will also then be drained. Is my interpretation of that correct? If not, would someone please explain further how to drain the pony?

2. It talks about then filling with 2 quarts of flushing oil, run engine for 2-3 minutes, then drain the flushing oil. I'm not familiar with flushing oil. Can someone please explain further?

3. Finally, what weight oil (by today's standards) do you recommend to refill each of the engine crankcases? The tractor is not used outside during the cold (upper Midwest) winter months and sits in a heated shop.

Thank you in advance for any and all helpful advice on this.

The manual was written in the days of non-detergent oil where flushing away the gunk was necessary. Today's detergent oil does not make it necessary to flush. I don't know what to say on the weight of oil to use. everyone has their own opinion. I use 10-30 non-synthetic though I don't see anything wrong with using synthetic. That little engine wraps up to somewhere around 4000 RPM's and stays there from the time it starts up to the time the gas is shut off and it coasts to a stop. I would be a little cautious about using a heavy oil in it.

Am I correct about draining the pony into the diesel crankcase, then changing the diesel engine oil?

Thank you for your answer. It is very helpful.

Yes, you drain the pony first and then the diesel. The drain bolt is located on top because the pony has no crankcase bottom of its own and the bolt threads into the top of the diesel's casing.
