Need advice from the 730 power steering experts

This 730 that is trying to wear me down has thrown me another curve. When this tractor came into my shop the power steering was completely empty of oil. It had been steam cleaned up real nice so there was no evidence of leaks and when I put oil in it there was no real evidence of a big leak anywhere. I have had the steering cylinder and vanes apart and found a broken pin and one vane seal broken. That is all together now. I also re-sealed the power steering pump. The pump looked OK inside so it had not been run without oil for very long.

The power steering did not feel quite right so I pulled the worm assembly out of it. When I twisted the worm gear and actuator assembly with my hands it just didn't feel right. When I twisted it one way it came to a nice hard stop at the end of the ramp. When I twisted it the other way it traveled farther and felt rough before it came to a soft stop. This is what I found. It needs a different worm gear but what about the one collar on the shaft with the spring? That chip does not go all the way to the back of the ramp so it might be OK, but then again? What do you experts say about this? This is only the second one I have had apart and the first one was almost 20 years ago

That will most likely cause a catch in the steering when you turn it all the way that way. You have probably driven tractors where they have a catch and you have to jerk the steering wheel back the other way and then it will turn again.

Two tractors ended up in the ditch in my neighborhood because of that catch. Neither tractor tipped and no one was hurt thank god. The first one was a 730 gas back in about 1967. The second was my own 630 with a young friend of my son driving. Happened 20 years ago and it still makes me shiver when I think of it. This is why I am so cautious about the power steering on two bangers.

Thanks for the advice to call Rich. He fixed me up on the worm gear and a power steering manual. Turns out most worm gears look like the one I showed in the picture making finding a good used one very hard to come up with.

The worm on my 80 had a chip out of it, probably similar to that. A buddy of mine built it up with a TIG, and it seems to work well now. There was plenty of other parts replaced at the time as well LOL

The old worm is not going in the junk for sure. I plan to build it up but the next tractor it goes on will be my own tractor and not someone elses. Anyway, Rich gave me some very valuable pointers to guide me along.
