This 730 that is trying to wear me down has thrown me another curve. When this tractor came into my shop the power steering was completely empty of oil. It had been steam cleaned up real nice so there was no evidence of leaks and when I put oil in it there was no real evidence of a big leak anywhere. I have had the steering cylinder and vanes apart and found a broken pin and one vane seal broken. That is all together now. I also re-sealed the power steering pump. The pump looked OK inside so it had not been run without oil for very long.
The power steering did not feel quite right so I pulled the worm assembly out of it. When I twisted the worm gear and actuator assembly with my hands it just didn't feel right. When I twisted it one way it came to a nice hard stop at the end of the ramp. When I twisted it the other way it traveled farther and felt rough before it came to a soft stop. This is what I found. It needs a different worm gear but what about the one collar on the shaft with the spring? That chip does not go all the way to the back of the ramp so it might be OK, but then again? What do you experts say about this? This is only the second one I have had apart and the first one was almost 20 years ago
