Today we tore down a 3020 syncro for a top shaft trans job. Every bit of the lining had peeled off the syncro plates. I have never seen that before. One or two small pieces that were still on just flaked off with my fingernail. Was it defective parts (tractor had been apart before), water in the hyd oil (a little bit was present) or did someone use a cheap oil? Current owner has only had it 3 or 4 years for light work. It is a 3020 side console without a rockshaft and has a wide swing drawbar. Has aftermarket fenders so most likely it had round ones originaly. Tom

I would be looking at the brakes after you get the top shaft done

The old 'You get what you paid for', does apply to lubricants. Cheap oils only pharkle up everything they are supposed to protect.

............ or maybe you were seeing Hy Gard with the John Deere dye in it by chance?

Nope. Different texture and the color differs somewhat. Also, the smell is different to me. Especially many years ago when type F and the first two generations of Dextron's were the only ones around.

Hard to nail the culprit in this case because you may not know the history of the machine. The answer may be simply, - always use the highest quality parts money can buy, tolerate zero moisture inside the hydraulic system and use Hy-Guard or equivalent.

Today's Featured Article - Welding Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. One of the most useful skills that an owner of older equipment can have is the knowledge and ability to weld. It seems like the older equipment can do a job, albeit slowly compared to newer stuff, but it tends to break more often. Many of the breakdowns are related to the implements that are being used: the disc, wagon or bushog are among them. Knowing how to fix stress cracks, reinforce weak joints by welding on steel support plates, or cutting and shaping parts and adapters out of raw stee ... [Read Article]
