Model B question

Been looking for a late model B to add to spring project list. Found numerous ones that would be a good project but most have the sheet metal cut out around when the exhaust stack comes out of the hood. Just wondering why this happened, is the exhaust hard to switch out, thanks, how many days till spring?

To change the muffler you had to remove the nose cone, grills, hood, gas tank, steering wheel, and steering shaft. Only after that can you get to the muffler bolts. It was easier for some guys to just chop the
hood and get the bolts that way. Styled A's are the same way. There are patches you can buy to fix the issue.

Yes you have to remove the hood to
replace muffler which also involves the
steering and dash. Based on my tractors
I'd guesstimate 80% were cut out.

Thanks for the information, I have a 50 so John Deere got smart and fixed the problem , nice to know you can get a patch fix

In addition if they didn't get crazy cutting the hole it wasn't too bad looking. I had one with a nicely cut square hole just large enough to get the muffler out. Does not look that bad.

There's also a patch that installs from the bottom of the hood with tack welds. The excess space around the
top pf the patch and hood is brazed closed. When done correctly and painted you can't tell it from an uncut
hood.
The locating of the patch is critical so that the repaired hood will line up with the muffler when the hood
is installed.
