John Deere synchro transmission

I have taken my 4010 to a shop to get the clutch rebuilt they have called me and told me the the synchronizer gear for 3rd gear and the
corresponding reverse gear is bad and that the third gear needs to be replaced. I was told it is on the bottom shaft which adds a lot of
hours to the job and that deere has made the parts obsolete. Does this sound reasonable. The third and corresponding reverse gear will shift
but have to kind of play with it to accomplish this I thought the gear shifting linkages might need adjusted. Any advice or information you
can give me would be appreciated. If the synchronize and the 3rd gear is bad where could I but them or if bad and can't fine parts what would
happen if i did not have the gears replaced could I just use all the other gears which do work. Thanks in advance for your help.

I ran into this on a 4010 also. Reverse gear was messed up along with the countershaft(mating gear). The reverse gear is on the topshaft which isn't so bad, but the countershaft is the last piece out and the first piece in on rebuilding. This means a different split from the clutch split, and also the axles and 3 pt housing comes off. Call some salvage yards and get the gears found before you go any further. And if this is done you mine notice some different sounds from gear to gear as they are worn and will need to wear in a bit. Customer was complaining to me about noises after a 4020 rebuild, so went for a ride for him to show me the sounds, then I asked him what parts we replaced and he said the fifth gear was replaced and guess what gear he was complaining about, he bought the used parts himself. Complaining came to a stop. And still do work for him.

Also the reverse gear is still used with 5th and 7th, so no getting by unless you only go forward.

Don't have a manual in front of me, its the gear(rev and 3rd) they use on the bottom/pinion shaft. I forgot to mention this, that when you change the reverse gear and countershaft, that this gear also has to be replaced as the teeth count/size changes. Deere must have had issues with this combination and then changed these to updated/heavier parts. On the 4010 that I did, the previous repair only did the topshaft rev gear and after some use the new gear didn't mesh with the original gears.
