The hydraulic pump on my 820 (3 cyl) with manual steering has been leaking more and more. Apparently, the OEM Bosch that is on mine is no longer available, nor are the seals to rebuild it, so I ordered a new one from Legacy Hydraulics.
The Service Manual says I need to remove two of the rivets in the drive-shaft-flex-coupling-thingy before using a commercial-type extractor to get the old pump removed. However, my very smart Irish friend says that I should be able to use a chisel or air hammer to pop the taper free without removing the rivets.
I have attached photos of the old part attached to coupling and shaft, and the new pump showing the taper.
Anyone have experience doing this type of job, with opinions on exactly where to place the chisel? just under the nut? Under the coupling closer to the pump?
Can I really do this without removing and therefore replacing the two rivets?
Thanks,
