Trying to help an elderly friend with
his JD,so he can sell it. I'm a Ford
and Farmall guy...... We got the 420
running, cleaned carb, new coil,
points, condenser,and rotor button.
Hadn't run in years. We pulled the
spark plugs out and poured some
transmission fluid in. Spun it over to
get most of it out. Still smoking! Not
worried about that. Won't stay running
more than 30-40 seconds. Back fires
through carb and dies. Couple times it
belched fire out the exhaust then
poofed out carb and died. Any thoughts?
I swear it's only running on 2
cylinders!! Lol.

it only has 2 cyl's. checking the compression would be the first place to start. then remove valve cover and check valves for sticking and also do a reset on them . standard procedure.

"Won't stay running more than 30-40 seconds. Back fires through carb and dies."

My gut reaction is that the carburetor isn't getting fuel fast enough to fill the bowl. Remove the plug from the bottom of the bowl and check that you're getting a steady stream (like the size of a pencil) for at least 60 seconds.

If not, work backwards from there up towards the tank. Be aware that there is a screen as part of the 90 degree fitting at the carb.

Right now it has a temporary gas tank on
it. That tank has good flow, we have
used it on many tractors. Tractor tank
was full of old gas, but surprisingly
clean. Will get it plumbed correctly in
next couple days.

Sure sounds like it ran out of gas on the video. My guess is clogged elbow screen or a speck of trash in the load needle.

"That tank has good flow, we have used it on many tractors." Great, that eliminates the tractor's tank as a problem for now. But the suggestion was: Pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carburetor, and see what the flow from the drain hole is. A pint in two minutes or less? That test confirms flow into the carb bowl. Sorry, If that is what you did and meant flow from the carb was good; it wasn't clear you pulled the carb drain plug, your reference was to the tank flow as I read it.
