any one have any idea of which john deere combine was the most popular
in the 1970s era?
lots of 4400/6600/ and 6620/7720 in my area. not many 3300 , but some 8820s in my area in the late 1970s
what was it like in your area?
thank you

In my area the 6600 outfitted with a 4 row head by far. Next would have been the 4400. The 1970's here was still pretty much small dairy country with mostly wheat and a little corn done for grain. That would change greatly by 1980. The grain guys on the productive soils hung on during that time while the most of the rest failed.

In western MD it was most likely the 4400 and the next county over was 6600's. Almost none sold new but plenty of used ones brought in from OH and IN. Tom

The 6600 was the most popular combine in the 00 series lineup over all. The 7720 was the most popular combine in the 20 series lineup.

7700 was the JD of choice in the wheat/barley area of northern ND. 6600 was heard of but rarely seen. As for the rest, we didn't really knew they were even made.

Grandad had a 6600 sidehill, but like you say, he may have bought it used. Ill try to remember to ask Saturday when he got that one. In the early-mid 70s at least I know he was using a a Massey combine still.

He said he liked the sidehill because it had a little more capacity (?). My brother said he remembers Grandad leaning it over a little to help with emptying the grain tank. It's the first combine I remember, but I only remember back to the mid 80s, ha!

Ron,

I now live east of Fargo in the country outside of Moorhead, but grew up on a farm 3 miles east of Sarles ND, which was on the north west border of Towner county and Cavalier county.
