upgrading alternator

Just wondering about alternators: my 2240 has a 35 amp 2 wire alternator and even after it has been rebuilt doesn't do a great job of keeping the battery charged. I usually leave it plugged into a trickle charger 1 amp and all is usually well, but if I do a long day's work, and especially if I am running lights (I've added a couple on my canopy and replaced the fender lights with LED's) the battery isn't fully charged, which I can tell from the trickle charger. The rebuild guy tells me it bench tests ok, but that it is a small alternator for the tractor. No obvious shorts or parasitic drains. Could I upgrade the alternator to something like the 55 amp my 2750 has and get ahead of this, or am I borrowing trouble? Anything else to consider?
Same question for my 2750 which has AC and various monitorts--evidently there is a 80 amp swap out.

Bosch or Delco ?
Some have external regulators.
Is the tachometer signaled from the alternator or an earlier cable driven tachometer? Serial number ?

Bosch, regulated from alternator not cable driven. power output from alt appears to be 10g twisted wire. In addition to question I asked, we seem to have a problem with the exciter circuit not working so the output doesn't jump from battery voltage to 13.5+ or 14v. Do you know where we could find a wiring diagram?

we cleaned all the key terminals but can't seem to trace the circuit to the exciter on the alternator. we did a little experiment where we fed it 1.5 volts from a AA cell and the output jumped, but without that it would only be reading battery voltage of 12.6 or so.
Thanks
