4020 starting issue

I have a '71 4020 that won't start with the switch. The starter has been rebuilt and I put on all new cables and a new solenoid. The batteries are fine. The only way it will start is if you cross the two posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver. Any ideas on how to fix this?

There's one or two safety safety switches in the "START" circuit depending upon if it's a power shift or a synchro.

Have you checked them? Often the wire connectors get wiggled out of place or get "dirty" and don't make contact.

The wires are YELLOW and end up at the starter solenoid.

If it is same as my 1970 4000D there is a relay behind and
above starter. Cannot remember if you access it by just
removing the shield with 4020 decal or the one behind it that
slides off after nut is removed. Also the neutral safety start
switch could be bad or need shim washer removed. BE
CAREFUL!

check the starter solenoid above the starter and make sure the tin work that its mounted too is grounded to the frame its mounted too. ivw
e seen poor contact between these 2 pieces a lot of times and that will be enough so the starter wont engage

There is a 2 prong connector on the left side near the
clutch pedal on mine that is prone to corrosion & all
sorts of trouble.
I believe it is there for when a clutch split is needed.
