What size field disc harrow for JD420 ?

I need to disc up at least 3 acres of our ground.
It is very poor sand, with maybe 75% coverage in junk grasses.
Absolutely no stones or rocks.

So how big of a disc harrow can I pull with my 1957 JD 420??

Have a 420. I would say not more than 8' and even 6' depending on how deep you want to go and you would want some weight on the rear tires, either
ballast in the tires or wheel weights.

In the real world, I thing you'll be hard pressed to pull anything over 5 foot in sandy ground. After a few passes, you might wish
it was 4.

What Randy said.....the first pass won't sink in too far with all the grass in it,
but once that's cut up, your disk will need to go deeper to do anything, and power
will be your limiting factor.

I've got the original 6 ft 3 pt John Deere
disk that came with the 420 S that I've
got new. It pulls it good in 3rd gear
powerwise on gray clay with fluid in the
rear tires. Gets mighty light on the front
with 1 slab weight tho. Start having
traction issues after the 3rd cutting.

(quoted from post at 12:43:45 04/07/21) I have a 6 foot 3pt hitch that my 40 pulls in sandy loam fairly well without weights or fluid.

Sounds good.
This is very poor sand supporting only about 75% growth of weeds.
And powder dry down at least 3 feet as of yesterday.

When we but in the septic tank system three years ago it was powder dry down to at least 8 feet.

If it were me, this would be as big as I'd
want to try to pull with any satisfaction.
