Old John Deere Swather

Hi everyone, I just bought an old John Deere Swather. The
seller said its an 800 but the tag says its a type W5100. When
I search that number it doesnt come up with anything. It has a
W51A0 head on it thats about a 14 cut width. The machine
seems to be in decent shape for the $1000 I paid for it. Out
here in Colorado you can get one that is even close to
working for less than 3-4k. He said it was used for through
2018 when one of the drive belts broke. He started to replace
it but decided hed rather just hire his hay out. It came with
new belts. The head has an auger in it instead of Draper belts
and doesnt look like any head on a 800 that I have seen. If
anybody knows exactly what model it is let me know. Are
there any common problems with these swathers or things to
watch out for?

Can you post a pic?
Single drive wheel or duals, one on each side of wheel drop? What engine? Cab ? Any decal with model number?

Posted some pictures of it. I believe its a Chrysler six cylinder engine, it doesnt have a dual wheels like the normal 800, it is just one wide one on the outside on each side

Looks really good! Platform is not all beat up, reel pipes and bars not torn up, reel teeth look good! Should be a good machine for you. Check platform and conditioner chains, lube and maybe replace to save sprockets.

I do love me a slant 6, the leaning tower of power, the ole buzzin half dozen.

This Heston hums along with the baby 170 slant 6.

This summer, an older neighbor stopped by when I was greasing the machine, I was swathing wheat straw. The neighbor was yacking with another neighbor when I climbed up the machine and started it to drive away. Older neighbor stopped mid sentence, gave me a look and said what was that sound? Sounded like the old darts and valiants!
I smiled real big and said of course, cause it's got a Chrysler slant 6.
Then the neighbor smiled too and said I haven't heard that sound in years, but you never forget it.

A descendent of the model 800 .

Hesston 420. I have spent a few hours on one of them and a few more with it torn apart. It is in semi retirement now as a Hesston 8400 is the main machine now. I need to get it out this year and change the water pump. They do not sell for anything around here so it can stay in the shed unless needed.

Yep. 800 only had draper headers too. 800s were popular around here for grain swathing. 830s not so much.

That's for cutting hay, right? I wouldn't want it in small grains as I think the auger would shell out some grain. The draper (we called them canvases in North Dakota) would be much gentler with ripe or nearly ripe small grain.

830 was more the hay machine but could have draper. 800 was primarily draper for grain but could be used for hay, but no conditioner, if I remember.

Yeah its just going to be used for Hay and Alfalfa. No one uses swathers around here for grain. They just harvest everything with a combine and bale the straw from the combine.

I operated an 800 with a hay conditioner for a couple of decades .
