John Deere 40 Steering

Bought a 40 tractor with a two wheel narrow front end. If I turn the front wheels all the way to the left the steering
wheel locks on it. If I manually move them back towards center the steering wheel unlocks and works again. What
could cause this?

Sounds like the steering gear may be set up too tightly.

Most of the wear occurs in the middle so if someone has set it up to eliminate most of the play there it may lock towards one or both ends, where the worm isn't worn as much.

Most likely the pins in your steering box are worn out and a previous owner tightened the adjustment screw down to much trying to get rid of excessive play in the steering wheel. Another possibility is they could have filled the box with regular grease which just pushes away and leaves the worm and pins dry.

Remove the grill and take the top off the steering box and see what you have. If it has stiff grease in there get it out. If the pins are worn you will need to replace them. They are much cheaper on ebay. Refill with 140wt gear oil or john deere cornhead grease. I blend the two for mine. Jack up the front to adjust the play.
