B tractor top cover over steering pedestal

I'm working on an early styled B for a friend. There was no gasket under the top cover of the pedestal and none is shown in the Parts Catalog. Is that an error in the Parts Catalog? Sure seems to me that there should be a gasket there. Also was very surprised to not find the two bearing cones for the steering shaft. The cups are there but no bearing cones and no pieces of bearings that would be there if they had been totally worn to shreds. There was so much play in the steering that it was possible to rotate the steering wheel with fore and aft shaft movement of about 1.5 inches before the front wheels would show any side to side movement.

What did the worm gear look like with no bearings? I was surprised how chipped and pitted mine was when I had it a part (1950 B).

Haven't done a precise check of the worm. I'll make sure I check that. Thanks for the reminder.

When you install new bearing cones put some heavy grease on the innermost one so that it will stay in the bearing cup. Pack the outer cone also. The front cover should go into place by hand. Don't use the two cap screws to draw it in place. If the inner cone has slipped out of place it will get crushed by drawing the cover in with the cap screws.

The JD part # for the bearing cones is JD7396R. They're still available from Deere for about $40 each. The link to eBay has them for about $20 each. Years ago I got them at NAPA using Timken 11-BC. Don't remember the cost but they were a lot cheaper than Deere.

I just ordered two bearing cones from Steiner. Same price as Ebay. My local NAPA wasn't able to cross JD7396 or Timken BC 11. And I trust the NAPA guy as he is older and goes out of his way to find things and help.

As folks have said in the past, the help here is good. Thanks to all you helpers. It makes "wrenching" easier.
