what was your very first john deere tractor you bought?
my was a 1959 model 530 i bought it less then a mile from my house, it set outside for several years,
one saturday i stopped in and ask if he would sell it, and he said yes. i was suprised, so i ran home and got the checkbook, lol
so what was yours?

1949 B in 1981. Paid $750. Still have it. Used on many WHO Radio tractor rides. Now sitting freezing in Iowa's cold waiting to rake hay.

I bought a stuck 1951B with M&W pistons in 1976, unstuck ring, used for a couple years, then sold for college money in 1980.

1938 unstyled A. Bought it at an auction 50 miles away in 1986 on my birthday. Bid $250, went on for a bit with no other bids, then the ringman said he had a bid for $225. I asked if that meant I could then bid $200 and still be top bid? Auctioneer decided to let me have it then for $250.

Tractor ran, but had mismatched rears. Getting it home was a challenge, and that is where I first learned about the struggles of trying to move the rear wheels in. In hindsight, it would have simpler and less time consuming to have spent a day just driving it home. But home it eventually came and I learned a ton from that old tractor, had a pile of fun with it too. Was the first of many, and I still have it.

1940 JD H, engine totally worn out. New pistons, ground crank, rods and mains, valve job, rebuilt governor, just a few other things to fix. That was 47 years ago, I used it for many years, restored it, showed it at Expo in 2001. Still starts on the second pull most of the time.

The first JD on this place is the 4010 diesel that is here today. Dad tried out a 730 a few years prior to that. The first JD tractor that I bought on my own is the 4250 that I have been using this winter to clean the driveway with. Hopefully, more JD's to be bought as time moves forward.

In 1980 I bought a 1955 John Deere 70 Diesel for $1500 she still runs good and holding her value. I like it when you buy something and its worth more 40 years later than when you bought it.

My first Deere was a 4010 that my dad gave to me when I started farming. He paid $4300 for it in 1989 with a cab and wide front. He sold the cab for $500 and the wide front end for $1000 and gave it to me. The first I bought was a 2510 diesel that I still have. Paid $2800 with a wide front in 1990. Tom

The 4010 a few year ago. It now needs engine work and is in the shed waiting. Maybe next year.

The 2510

The first one I bought was a 3020 diesel powershift . The first one I got was a John Deere 420c thE next one I got was a 4020 diesel synchro . The first John Deere I bought was a John Deere buck four wheeler the second was a John Deere 7700 turbo combine

1952 John Deere "A". 1998. Repaired it and it works like new. Sitting in the barn in Texas. Try to run it once or twice a year. Tires still have a trace of mold marks on the treads. Tires were new when I bought it.

1963 john deere 505 that I paid 1000 Francs in 1997 at age of 12. That is about 165 dollars. Only one I could afford.
The' I team up with my brother and father and bought a 1969 deere 4020 for 1500euros (1700 dollars) in 1997. The collector market was un existent in France back then and that same tractor is worth close to 10k here now. I may swap that one for a Deere 4240s because their value is very little now for what they are. 6466 turbo, Sg2 and mfwd for around 7500...

My first and only John Deere is the 4020 Dad bought new in 1967. My brother used it after Dad retired and I bought it from my sister-in-law after my brother passed away. I’ve had some mechanical work done on it including a 12 volt conversation and have taken it on five tractor rides. Hope to work on the cosmetic side this year.

Bought back Dads 70 diesel standard in 1988 that he had traded years prior . Bought back his 4x14 Deere drawn plough a few years ago .

A stem wind B. I guess I was probably 12 or 13. Dad and I used to buy and sell a lot of tractors. That one sat out behind a barn up the road where an old guy did body work. He had an H that he used around the yard. Dad and I stopped one day and asked if he'd sell the B. The mag was just hanging loose on it. He muttered something about why it was like that, but when I tried to get it running, we figured he had swapped it out and put the one off of it on the H. I did finally get it to run a little bit, but it wouldn't even pull itself. That's been a long time ago. I don't remember who I did finally sell it to. Somebody who wanted to work on it more than I did I guess.

I picked up a stem wind H a few years later. I was still in high school at the time. I traded a Honda 160 motorcycle for that one. I played around with it a little then sold it to another guy here in the neighborhood who was looking for a wood hauler. Seems to me like I got $300 for that little thing. That was a pretty good chunk of change at the time.

I bought a ‘51 A at an auction about 20 years ago. It was about 20 miles from home. The tractor ran so I drove it home. Raked hay a couple times with it. Now it sits in the barn - need to get it going again!

Bought my first tractor 57 years ago when I was 11. It was a 1927 JD model D. Solid rust. The left cyl was split from freezing. Ended up I found a brand new block. Got it running and new painted. Found a guy in Mn who was making new old style lugs. I doubt if it has 150 hrs on it. Still have it. Repainted it five years ago.

Model 50 was my first Deere purchased in 1990. Not running at the time, Head had freeze crack. Removed head and welded and serviced head. New Rings and it ran excellent. Sold it in 1996. Now I don't count the 130 pedal tractor that I got for Christmas in 1958!

Bought a used 1958 John Deere 820 diesel in 1967. Boy, was that a huge step up from the '51 Oliver 99 standard. Have never bought a new tractor.

Only 2 john Deere on the place

My dad bought a used 2010 gas in fall of 1971 for $1,650. It has been used for a few acres of plowing and drilling but most of its duty has been 3 point pto jobs. Thousands after thousands of hours with 3 point pto air blaster sprayer, or 10 foot flail, or filbert harvester.

My moms dad bought MC crawler new. Mom remembers her dad pacing the kitchen floor, talking about whether or not he could buy a new tractor, if he could get it paid of ect. He farmed with horses exclusively til 51, and the MC covered the 60 acre farm by itself for the next 50 years

A pair of 44 B in 1975. Both stuck engines, took both to make one. Both are long gone. Have had several since, most were scrapped, have A,B,D and 2 60s now that am parting out.

My first John Deere tractor was a 1949 A that I still have. It gets started once or twice a year at the most. Has been used to haul maple sap and run a three point buzz saw.

Was Saturday December 21st, 1963. Dad is in the shop working on something, I go in, grab my B-B gun, fill it with some B-B's, and head out to go hunting as usual on Saturday morning. I walk around the corner of the shop, Hmmm, 4 bottom Deere trailing plow? Dad must be keeping it for somebody. I walk back to the machine shed, slide a door open and walk in. My eyes adjust to the darkness but not this danged green thing sitting in the 3rd stall! I go back to the shop and ask Dad what's up with the green tractor. " That's YOUR'S, To do fieldwork with this spring." And we walk out and back to the machine shed. I slide the door open to let some light in. Dad's in the seat. It's an R diesel it says. Dad messes with some controls and what sounds like a mini-bike motor fires up, WAY UP in RPM, then pulls down and almost dies. He tries starting the diesel another time or two and the noisey little engine dies. Dad takes a little cup out from under the hood, hands it to me, "Go fill this with gas!" and off I go on the run. I can't run with it full of gas. More noise, more cranking, we do get a little gray/white smoke out the exhaust pipe, then had to fetch another cup of gas, Thinking maybe filling a 5 gallon can with gas and carrying it to the machine shed makes more sense! Dad stopped after the second full cup of gas ran out. Never did get a pop from the big engine. Really wasn't that cold, 25-30 degrees. We looked the plow over. Last spring I did some plowing, Super M-TA and IH #8 3-14's, Even plowed with Dad on his '51 M. And this Derre is Mine?
Late March, early April, 40 acres of alfalfa sod, 20 acres old hay ground, 20 acres old hog pasture, Dad says He'll lead and I can follow on the R, yes, we finally got it running. Dad's running 3rd gear, 5 mph, R with exact same hp only runs 2nd gear in sod, 3.3 mph with 4-14's. Had one clay hill Dad said I had to stop, shift to 1st to climb, can't lug the R down. We're plowing around the 40, Dad's rounding off the corners, he just about catches me and starts over again, I just sit there driving in circles all day. Took two days to plow the sod. Dad hooked the IH 3-14 on the R, could run 3rd gear then, 4.3 mph, then the township road commissioner heard we had an R, HE HAD to have it! Took a while to make a deal but but the road commissioner finally got the R. I plowed our last 16 acres that spring with the SM-TA pulling the Deere 4 bottom plow.
Dad bought a 4010-D about the 14th of December 1968. And about December 13, 1969 Dad bought a 1940 JD B, hand start, no hyd, small 1-1/8" pto stub shaft. We went back a week later with a NFE tractor dolly to tow it 20 miles home, Dad and I each cranked on the flywheel for an hour, we tried pull starting it for 2 miles, finally started cooking the spark plugs, they weren't wet, just black and finally it popped a few times and ran. Local Deere mechanic said a A & B needed engine running to flat tow. The B never did really start well. We tried using it on chores like hauling water to hog lots, every day haul a load a half mile, every day the B got unhooked, pushed out of the way and Super H hooked up to water wagon. The 4010 got parked every fall if we did any fall plowing, if no fall plowing, it sat from July till following spring. Kinda like the R, once started for the day it was never shut off till we were done with it.

1941 H with an H1 hyd lift plow. It started and ran good. PO kept it in a small shed and only used it to plow his garden in the spring. Good thing was he had a petcock on the head and drained it each time. Said he had some work done on it and the lift would not work. Got into the pump and it only had one gear in it. Fixed that and I used it pulling brush and logs out of the woods a few years when the fan would not run sometimes. Got worse till it didn't run at all. Then I noticed the pulley would move up and down. Turned out the left cam bearing was shot which cause the timing gears and governor gear and bearing to wear bad which chewed up the bevel gears. This was back in the late 70s when Mother Deere and local dealers were great at replacement parts.

I bought this 8630 when it was about 3 years old and I was 19 or twenty.

That was around 43 or 44 years ago.

(Photo is from the 80's.)

I still have it.

An industrial 400, the heavy cousin to a 2020, about 3 weeks ago. Still repairing and adjusting previous owners fixes and bypasses but getting there.

I just can't remember which came first, the 2520, or the 4020D power shift. Both used. The 4020 well used, but the 2520, little used. The 2520 still had the original tires, and an underneath exhaust! It got converted to diesel, upright exhaust, two remotes, and a bigger hyd pump. The 4020 is retired, and for sale.

I bought a 59 630 at my ex mother in laws, neighbors dairy sell out in 1974. Kept that tractor 25 years longer than that nasty woman.

My first JD tractor was a 1936 A at a farm sale about 15 miles away in June 1980. It was the same year I graduated high school and later in the day of grandpa’s funeral. It ran. Looked like previous owner had dumped a bucket of green paint on the hood. A school friend bought an F20 at same sale. I still have the A and run it as often as I can. It has a Heisler head, standard bore and barks really nice through the straight pipe! Never has been really restored as I was afraid I couldn’t play with a nicely restored tractor. The friends F20 has been gone for decades.
My first real farm tractor was an early 4430 with about 3800 hours I purchased from an uncle in fall 1984 when I rented his farm. I still use the tractor almost daily mostly for chores. It now has a Westendorf WL42 loader and moves many hay and bedding bales for cattle. At one time it was dyno’d at JD shop around 170 hp. It has had transmission work, a/c redone, many miscellaneous repairs but the head has never been off. At present it has 12860 hours on the tach. Been a good old tractor. I’m not sure I could ever get rid of it...

JD LA.. Pistons were stuck in the block from sitting for who knows how many years. Broke 1 , got the other to free up.. Put rings in it and got it running. Traded it for a snowmobile back in the 70's
