430 engine block number

trying to get my serial number for my 430,looking at my block number the first number/letter only has the top part stamped readable it is a letter F or the number 5. I have looked at it a hundred times and cant figure it out. Has anyone ever seen a block number start with a letter? One more question is there any other way to get a form for a a duplicate pin plate other than go thru a territory manager,i contacted mine and he simply would not send me a form to fill out he said tell me the number and i will get it looked up for or something like that. anybody have a extra form or can get me one? i know the if you want a tractor with a serial number buy a tractor with a serial number deal but sometimes life just dose not go as planed.

Are you looking at a number stamped into the block or a raised number cast on the block? A casting number would have been on many blocks and useless in determining a serial number for the machine, beyond the range of serial numbers it might have been used during. Many John Deere casting and part numbers start with letters. The next point, if it is a hand stamped number, would be; Are you sure it is the original engine/block to the tractor? Wishing you good luck with this.

And to add to that, I have a John Deere engine with the casting number hand stamped into it, rather than the normal cast number on the block. So even stamped, it isn't a certain thing it is a serial number. You could post a picture of the number you are looking at, it might shed some light.

My 420 block number is B44XX. They don't seem to have much interest in replacing old tags anymore. I think Two-Cylinder club could confirm your configuration if you gave them this number but they currently have limited access to records because of nnalert. You would at least know your filing paperwork on the right number this way.

A couple things to try if you haven't. I am assuming you have it very clean. Try taking a couple pictures of the number you found. Sometimes letters/digits will show up better in a picture. Try with and without a flash.

Try using a sheet of paper and a lead pencil to do a rubbing of the number.

For folks not familiar with Dubuque tractors they have a engine number stamped into the block that is not a part number or casting number. It can be used to back track the serial number and model configuration. (T,W,H etc) I don't know the details exactly but since the engine can be pre-assembled on a separate line this was probably a good idea to link all the parts together in case there was a bad batch of parts that installed. There is also a transmission number but I haven't heard of any info from it.

I did some more research and found that info. Supposedly that number can be found on a build sheet and the machine serial number can be traced from that and all the other info like model and other things they will ask. They will be looking to see if everything matches what that build sheet says before giving a machine serial number. Even then one can only be 100% certain the machine serial number is correct in the end, if the they know the engine has never been changed. Replacement blocks supposedly will not have a number. It also sounds like the engine numbers don't follow the machine numbers as engines were prebuilt and pulled randomly from stock. It sounded like the transmission numbers when there are a dead end, at least as far as leading back to the machine serial number.

Thanks to all for your replies. Yes it is the hand stamped number in the block used to cross reference the serial number. I do appreciate any and all answers,thoughts,guess's.I really think the guy who said deere wasnt too interested in helping locate those missing serial numbers was right on the money. You can learn a lot sometimes by just listening to others opinions and answers. To any body interested in green magazine [sep 2020] in the the ask mr. thinker section they have a very interesting small article on this very subject,they talk about the engine serial number,where its at,and how it can be cross referenced to the tractors serial number,they talk about going your deere dealer and what you need to do who to ask for and what form you need .its a interesting article for anyone like me who has a dubuque built deere with no serial number and would love to have your serial number.

I had this information from a while back. Don't know if it will work or not but worth a shot anyway.
