I think I am plumbed in wrong

Shouldn’t I have my return going into the fitting where the
arrow points ? And then the check valve goes where I have
the loader return

The check valve needs to go in the same fitting that the loader return is attached to, the fitting with the arrow is for the rockshaft.

Your assumption is correct. The first picture would send loader return oil to the front pump without going through the filter.

Going to switch fittings then get the plain one tapped

That thought just came to mind while I was thinking Of this check valve glad we confirmed that . I’ve made some mistakes not getting enough sleep and working all day night last year thankfully this one wasn’t catastrophic
