70 Diesel Crankshaft spacer

Had crank machined for overhaul. When placing spacer it stops 3/16 from thrust disc. It stops at the radius just before the disc. If I slide crank over so the spacer contacts the disc the disc falls off the crank key. There's no radius in the spacer to meet the crank radius and I split the spacer trying to drive it over. I disassembled this over a year ago and don't remember how it was at that time. I do have the crank blocked to the left. If somebody has any input I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

It's been a long time since I've worked on one of those, there's LOTS of parts in there, are they all in place and which specific one is giving you trouble?

First of all do you have the crank forced all the to the left by blocking the engaged clutch (belt) pulley with pressure from a
jack or simply wedging a block against the belt pulley?

That flywheel spacer is subject to wear on the smooth face and is sometimes the reason you have too much crank end play. Does the face of your spacer have spiral grooves on it or is it totally smooth? Is there a part number on the rim of the spacer? JD had problems with the early design and there was an upgrade kit available. I usually see weird combinations of parts when I pull the thrust cover on 70 diesels. The notch on the spacer is where the flywheel square tab fits to drive the spacer...it's usually wallowed out from years of use. It's possible to go 180 degrees on that part and cut a new slot that matches the square tab on the back of the flywheel. Measure the height of the spacer and post back to see how much wear your spacer has.

The spacer measures 1.245 and it has the rings showing little wear. The thrust disc measures .162 thick.

The correct spacer for the 70 diesel is A3324R,the early 720 diesels F3565R and late 720 diesels and 730 diesels R21624R. The height of the A3324R spacer should be about 1.382 inches and has a grooved face. They offered a "oil slinger service kit" back in the day as AR21950R to remedy problems they were having in the field with this assembly. Looks like your spacer is missing metal if it is A3324R, or you have a 720/730 spacer. There should be a part number on the spacer at about the 4 or 5 o'clock position when the notch is at 12 o'clock position.

The left one was on the tractor A3324R. The right on came from a friend R21624 He said it came off of a G. Its what I need because it has a bell mouth problem is it's to big for the thrust housing.
