4020 popping out of reverse

Just picked up a 68 4020 diesel when you put it in reverse in high or low range the shift lever doesn’t drop all the way in, and when you let the clutch out it pops out of reverse. I tried to adjust the shift linkage and the front most linkage doesn’t seems long enough ( doesn’t move up enough) to line up with the pin hole . Any ideas before I pull the top cover and cab off the tractor?

If you are sure the linkage is adjusted properly, then the synchronizers are worn. Top shaft on trans needs to be removed and rebuilt. In your case, cab, trans cover, rockshaft needs to be removed and the trans needs to be split from the rear end. Reman top shaft is right around $2000.May want to replace the pto brake while you are in there

First thing is get a John Deere service manual. Then start going over all the gearshift linkage starting with the gear shift itself and the gearshift latch. If the gearshift is worn weld it up and grind down. Replace the center pivot and the roll pins that go in it. Then go over the rods and trans shifter arms and get rid of all the play. Also there are two detents behind plugs on the side of the trans. These were a pointer with a spring. Replace them with the update kit which is a ball and retainer and different springs then remove all shaft end play. You might have to go to a 4230 parts book to find the ball and retainer as I am not sure if it is the 4020 parts book.My dealer just knows what I want when I ask for the update kit.You could spend a fair amount of money but it still is much cheaper than trans work and you will end up needing to do this even if you rebuild the trans. I have taken some very worn transmissions and made them ok by just doing the outside rebuild.Tom
